UNIMAS provides financial assistance to the local community supporting the start-up of financially and socially sustainable businesses through grants and collaboration. Among the succesful projects that have been done were The Borneo Apong Golden Syrup and EcoAquamuniti Project under Lestari Fund. UNIMAS is supporting the Apong Community in Kampung Tanjung Apong, Kampung Tambak, and Kampung Spoah by helping establish a mechanized processing center with funding from the Dana Pembangunan Usahawan Bumiputera (DPUB) through TERAJU. The project, launched in 2019, aims to improve the income of 45 participants by 2024. The processing centers will eventually be managed by a cooperative (Koperasi).

The Sempeng: EcoAquamuniti project is funded by the Lestari Fund, an internal initiative by UNIMAS aimed at promoting sustainable development within communities to support the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG2030) set by the United Nations.The project’s completion ceremony was held on March 13, 2023 in Kampung Tanjung Bang, Matang, attended by local leaders, including the Penghulu, Village Head, and representatives from the community and UNIMAS.Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), through its Faculty of Applied and Creative Sciences, is supporting the community in Kampung Tanjung Bang, Matang, by designing a system for the cultivation of Sempeng. The Sempeng: EcoAquamuniti project introduces this aquaculture activity to the local community as an alternative economic avenue. The project aims to expose coastal communities to a high-potential seafood that is not yet widely cultivated commercially.
