1. | Twenty members of the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Cultural Body (BAYU) showcased the rich diversity of Sarawak’s heritage through ethnic dance performances at the Bali World Culture Celebration, part of the 2024 Bali Arts Festival held from 9 to 15 July at the Taman Werdhi Budaya Art Centre. Featuring dances from the Iban, Melanau, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and Malay Sarawak communities, their participation aimed to promote Sarawak as a culturally vibrant tourism destination and to elevate the global recognition of BAYU, UNIMAS, and the state itself. The festival also provided a valuable platform for networking and future collaboration with artists from countries such as China, Canada, the United States, Japan, India, Taiwan, Ukraine, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Distinguished attendees included Sarawak’s Minister and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, along with senior officials and delegates from the ministry.
2. | UNIMAS joins the global community in commemorating the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, celebrating the resilience, cultural richness, and invaluable contributions of indigenous communities worldwide. As an institution deeply rooted in Borneo’s diverse heritage, UNIMAS continues to play a leading role in preserving and promoting indigenous cultures through impactful research, active community engagement, and various cultural preservation initiatives, including efforts to safeguard traditional knowledge, language, and practices. Looking ahead, UNIMAS envisions a future where the rights of indigenous peoples are fully upheld, their cultural identities continue to flourish, and their voices are represented on global platforms. The university encourages the public to support this collective effort by participating in cultural activities, learning about indigenous histories and rights, and advocating for inclusive policies that protect and empower indigenous communities.
