In Feb until April 2022, UNIMAS organized HACKATHON: The Climate Change - Maker Challenge, Impact of Climate Change at Coastal Villages.  The primary concern for coastal communities includes coastal erosion, flooding, saltwater intrusion and inundation. These may destroy critical infrastructure & property, reduce fisheries production and threaten conservation efforts for organisms & coastal ecosystems. Multidisciplinary and sustainable approaches include using AI, IoT, Cloud and enhanced visualisations or insights from other sectors, including entrepreneurship or social innovators, besides co-creating with the communities themselves. Successful Hackathon teams commonly consist of designers, technologists, project managers, and content experts to showcase innovation for the betterment of local communities. This hackathon was also a collaboration with international partners includes ACES, GCRF & UK Research and Innovation.

The 9th eBKF in 2022 was a hybrid event held in Bario, Sarawak, combining virtual and physical participation. This approach aims to make it easier for participants from abroad and those unable to travel to join while also involving local communities and indigenous peoples (LCIPs) in the region, seen as crucial for its success. The theme for eBKF9 is "Climate Change, Sustainable Biodiversity, and Indigenous Knowledge on the island of Borneo," aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #13 and #15. The event reflects a shift towards recognizing indigenous knowledge in global environmental governance forums, acknowledging the wisdom developed by societies with deep connections to their natural environment.
