1. | The Sempeng: EcoAquamuniti project, launched by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), aims to assist fishermen in Kampung Tanjung Bang, Matang by promoting the commercial cultivation of sempeng, a type of shellfish found along the coastal areas. Sempeng, a marine organism from the Cirripedia species, is commonly found along the shores of areas like Telaga Air, Lundu, and Matang. Although there is high demand for sempeng, its supply is limited because it is harvested through traditional methods. The project began on 1 July 2022 with 10 local fishermen involved, and a Sempeng Cultivation Area of 20 feet by 150 feet was established. In addition to hands-on cultivation training, participants were also introduced to agro-entrepreneurship training, aimed at opening up opportunities in domestic markets and seafood restaurants. The project is expected to increase the income of local fishermen by 5-10% over the next five years. This initiative is funded by Dana Lestari, a UNIMAS internal fund that supports sustainability projects within communities, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDG2030) by the United Nations. The project's completion ceremony took place on 13 March 2023, with attendees including community leaders, UNIMAS representatives, and project stakeholders. | |||||||||||||
