The fourth workshop on “Guidelines for Biodiversity-Friendly Plantation” was held from 1 to 3 December 2024 in Tanjung Lumpur, Kuantan, Pahang. This three-day workshop continued the planning and development of topics for the upcoming guideline manual.The workshop was attended by Project Leader Dr. Tengku Rinalfi Tengku Putra Tengku Azizan, PKPKM President Adzmi Hassan, Supreme Council Appointee Mohd Bazain Yusoh, and representatives from MEME, UNIMAS, Johor Plantation, Sime Darby Guthrie (SDG), PERHILITAN, and NIOSH. Johor Plantation representative, Mohd Farid, shared several initiatives to address human-tiger conflicts, such as testing portable electric fences for cattle paddocks, establishing patrolling teams, and proposing mobile towers for monitoring near cattle paddocks. Dr. Wong Ee Phin, Principal Investigator of the Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME) project, also presented their approaches to managing elephant conflicts in Johor. She noted that Kluang recorded the highest elephant presence (75 individuals) but had the lowest number of human-elephant conflict cases and property or crop damages compared to other areas.The Guideline Manual is expected to be published in April 2025.

On 30 September 2024, UNIMAS hosted a productive meeting with representatives from WWF-Malaysia’s Marine Programme – Aquaculture Team, Mr. Victor Charlie Andin and Mr. Chor Wei Kang. The session was facilitated by new lecturer Dr. Lau Lik Ming and included participation from senior lecturers Dr. Farah Akmal binti Idrus, Dr. Fazimah binti Aziz, Dr. Roslianah binti Asdari, and Dr. Teng Sing Tung, alongside faculty members from Resource Biotechnology and Agrotechnology. The discussion focused on the scope of aquaculture in Sarawak and explored potential areas for collaboration between UNIMAS and WWF-Malaysia. The meeting concluded with WWF-Malaysia expressing keen interest in pursuing joint initiatives, laying the groundwork for future collaborative efforts in advancing sustainable aquaculture practices in the region.
