Researchers from UNIMAS, in collaboration with Coventry University, launched the Frugal Artist‑in‑Residence (FAiR) programme to engage coastal communities—especially marginalised fishing villages—in environmental education through art. On 15 September 2024, the first FAiR STEAM Beach Festival was held at Kampung Pasir Pandak, involving over 90 participants in a range of creative activities blending arts and science to foster ecological awareness. Local artists facilitated workshops, such as doodling endangered marine species, creating collages from plastic waste, making “nature bracelets” from plants, and producing cyanotype prints—all designed to deepen the community’s connection with their natural surroundings. The project was funded by UKRI and involved partners such as the Malaysian Society for Marine Sciences and the Kuching North City Council’s local community committee.

On 28 November 2024, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) held a comprehensive meeting with Tongwei Group, China to explore potential cooperation, knowledge sharing, and technology integration in fisheries and aquaculture. The session brought together UNIMAS senior management, academicians, lecturers, and students from the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, who engaged in discussions to identify areas of collaboration and innovation. The university expressed sincere appreciation to all participants for their contributions, highlighting the event as a significant step toward strengthening international partnerships and advancing sustainable aquaculture practices.
