1. | The IBEC - Institute of Biodiversity & Environmental Conservation (UNIMAS) proudly represented Sarawak, Malaysia, at the 46th UNESCO World Heritage Committee Meeting held in New Delhi, India, from 21–31 July 2024. The Sarawak delegation, led by YB Datuk Haji Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, included representatives from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, the Ministry of Urban Development and Natural Resources, and the Sarawak Museum Department. During the meeting, Niah National Park was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its global significance for archaeological discoveries, including the oldest modern human remains in Southeast Asia, approximately 40,000 years old, as well as its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. This designation places Niah alongside Gunung Mulu National Park as Sarawak’s celebrated World Heritage Sites. | |||||||||||||
2. | UNIMAS successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bung Siburan Heritage Association (BSHA) on 12 June 2024 at The Gallery, DeTar Putra, led by the Zoological Technology (ZooTech) Programme of the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology. The MoU marked the mutual commitment of both parties to collaborate on university-community research activities related to biodiversity, including joint research projects, development of nature-based tourism, knowledge transfer, and professional training programs. Distinguished guests who attended and witnessed the event included Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr. Jerip Susil, Honorable Advisor of BSHA; Yang Berbahagia Datu Ik@Pahon, UNIMAS Board of Director (Private Representative); and Lt. Cmdr. (Rtd.) Mr. Robert Tella Gunjom, President of BSHA. | |||||||||||||
