In Sematan on 18 November 2024, UNIMAS, together with the Sematan/Lundu Area Fishermen Association and the Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia Sarawak (LKIM Sarawak), launched a community workshop on sustainable grouper seed farming.

By leveraging NGO-type partnerships with community associations and government fishery bodies, the initiative exemplifies how civil-society actors and academia can unite to advance Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as life below water (SDG 14) and decent work & economic growth (SDG 8). Through shared training on aquaculture technology, water-quality monitoring and hands-on fish-farming skills, the collaboration empowers local fishers to diversify livelihoods and reduce dependence on over-harvested marine stocks. The story underscores how bridging universities, NGOs/community associations and marine authorities creates a model for inclusive and sustainable development.
