To celebrate the first anniversary of Niah National Park’s UNESCO World Heritage recognition, UNIMAS’s Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC) joined forces with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) for an inspiring community program themed “Co-guardians of Niah National Park through Citizen Science.”

Bringing together 133 participants—including local leaders, teachers, students, and government representatives—the event empowered the community to take an active role in protecting biodiversity and preserving their natural heritage. Through hands-on learning and citizen science, the program strengthened the bond between UNIMAS and local communities, championing a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.

Understanding the need to educate the public on environmental conservation and protection, IBEC are committed in encouraging science outreach to rural areas and schools.

The team consists of Researchers, Administrative Staff and Postgraduates. Most of the activities during our outreach includes informative talks on flora and fauna for adults and children, followed by gamification for kids while applying basic conservation knowledge and community cooperation work with adults at a specifically targeted population.
