1. | On 24 September 2024 — coinciding with the 183rd anniversary of the signing of the 1841 Brunei‑Brooke Agreement of 1841 — the Institute of Borneo Studies (IBS) at UNIMAS, in collaboration with Yayasan Budaya Melayu Sarawak (YBMS), hosted a public lecture titled “A fresh look at the 1841 Brunei-Brooke Agreement: Unveiling new interpretations” at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. The talk was presented by renowned Sarawak historian Datu Dr Hj. Sanib Hj Said, whose work spans over forty years. He offered audiences a fresh interpretation of the Agreement by examining the original Jawi-language version rather than relying solely on the English translations that have dominated many historical accounts. The event drew 54 participants from diverse backgrounds, reflecting growing public interest in Sarawak’s past and in “decolonising” history—challenging Eurocentric narratives and putting local perspectives at the front. IBS emphasised that this lecture is part of its ongoing commitment to democratise knowledge and fulfil UNIMAS’s mission as a “community-driven university”. By opening up scholarly-informed public talks, the institute seeks to engage the wider community, not just academic circles.
2. | The Mini Space Camp Artemis, held from 28–30 May 2024 at the Faculty of Engineering, UNIMAS, was a collaboration between Apadilangit and UNIMAS to inspire interest in STEM among children aged 6–13. The three-day camp introduced participants to NASA’s Artemis mission, hands-on rocket and rover building, and teamwork-based science activities. Through engaging, practical experiences, the camp successfully nurtured curiosity and creativity, encouraging young minds to explore the possibilities of science, technology, and space exploration.
