On 31 July 2023, UWC members visited the Jabatan Bekalan Air Luar Bandar (JBALB) Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (SAWAS) project in Lubok Kura, Kota Samarahan, joined by the JBALB team and MUT representatives. The team traveled by boat across Sungai Sabang to reach the site, where they learned about the rainwater harvesting canopy that collects rainwater into a 150k-gallon stainless steel tank for treatment and distribution to villagers. The villagers expressed satisfaction with the fully functioning system, which has improved their daily lives and helped bridge the gap between rural and urban areas.UWC first visit to JBALB SAWAS project. On 14 and 15 August 2023, UWC members visited the SAWAS project at Lubok Antu, Sri Aman, in collaboration with JBALB. The project provides clean water to 59 doors of Rumah Panjang David Ujan. The journey took around 2.5 hours, including a challenging 1-hour off-road trip, but was rewarded with stunning views of virgin forest. The SAWAS system utilizes mountain gravity feed water and an on-site dam as the water source, supplying treated water to the longhouse. Prior to this system, the community struggled with water shortages during long dry spells. The visit left a lasting impact, as the team was warmly welcomed by Tuai Rumah David Ujan, his family, and the villagers, who shared how the SAWAS system has transformed their daily lives.
