1. | On 30 November 2023, UNIMAS Water Centre (UWC) and RAF Technologies Sdn. Bhd. launched an innovative high-tech water treatment system at the Simunjan Water Treatment Plant, marking a significant step towards addressing the need for clean water in rural areas. The event highlighted the successful collaboration between academia and industry, aimed at providing safe drinking water to communities, particularly in peat-laden regions.The ceremony was attended by key figures, including YB Encik Awla bin Dris, the assemblyman for N25 Simunjan, and representatives from UNIMAS, RAF Technologies, and government agencies. The project, supported by the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunications Sarawak and Jabatan Bekalan Air Luar Bandar (JBALB), focuses on peat water treatment without chemicals, ensuring water meets the National Drinking Water Standards.The initiative also included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNIMAS and RAF Technologies. The technology has been verified by accredited laboratories and is seen as a key step towards achieving the government’s goal of providing 100% treated water throughout Sarawak, with plans to expand to other Southeast Asian countries facing similar water challenges. 2. | During a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MoTS), Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin encouraged Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) to explore the development of hydrogen energy to power the future transport sector. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between Unimas experts and the Sarawak government to advance renewable energy solutions for a sustainable and green transportation industry. Unimas Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi briefed Lee on potential areas of collaboration, including urban traffic management, road safety, and transportation logistics research. The meeting also addressed the water hyacinth problem affecting river transportation in Sarawak. Unimas officials, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Wan Hashim, attended the discussion, which highlighted ways to improve transportation infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion in major cities and towns. |
