1. | In line with the UNIMAS Sustainability Agenda, the university encourages food operators to adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing single-use plastics, sourcing ingredients locally, and minimizing food waste through portion control. Some cafeterias integrate farm-to-table practices using produce from UNIMAS’ community gardens and faculty-led urban farming projects. On 18 December 2024, a total of 337 students from the course PPD1041 Soft Skills and Volunteerism Fundamentals, together with their group facilitators, carried out the installation of an automated herbal garden rig under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Alamshah Bolhassan (Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology). In addition to installing the rig, the students also filled polybags with soil and compost fertilizer and arranged them in a grid formation at the nursery site. Appreciation was extended to Bunga Raya College, Allamanda College, and the Faculty of Economics and Business for providing the site, as well as to the College/Faculty Entrepreneur Clubs for assisting in managing and sustaining the herbal garden project. These efforts demonstrate UNIMAS’s commitment not only to providing healthy and affordable meals but also to fostering environmental sustainability and social responsibility across campus.
2. | The cafeterias and food outlets at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) play a vital role in supporting campus food security and promoting sustainable eating habits among the university community. To ensure that all students, especially those from the B40 income group, have access to nutritious and affordable meals, UNIMAS collaborates with food operators to offer a wide range of meal options including local Sarawakian dishes, Western-style meals, and vegetarian menus at reasonable prices. Selected cafeterias participate in the “Menu Rahmah UNIMAS” initiative, where balanced meals are priced as low as RM3 to RM5, making them accessible without compromising nutritional value.
